Mobile starter motor replacement across the North West

A click, a whirr or nothing at all when you turn the key? We make sure it is the starter, not the battery, then replace it where the car is parked.

A mechanic working underneath a car

The starter motor turns the engine over until it fires. When it fails you usually get a click, a whirr or nothing at all, and a flat battery can look exactly the same, which is why so many people buy a battery they didn’t need.

We test the battery and the starter before recommending anything, then replace a faulty starter on your driveway, at work or at the roadside, with a clear quote before we start.

Signs of a failing starter motor

Starters often give some warning before they stop altogether. Call us if you notice:

  • One loud click, but the engine doesn’t turn
  • A whirring noise without the engine turning
  • Grinding when you start the car
  • Starting only some of the time
  • Bright dash lights, but nothing happens
  • A burning smell after trying to start

Not sure it’s the starter?

Our car won’t start guide explains what the different noises usually mean, and our battery replacement page covers the other usual suspect.

What affects the cost of a new starter motor

Starters vary a lot from car to car, so we don’t publish a one-size price. These are the things that decide it:

  • The car itself

Some starters sit on top of the engine. Others hide underneath or behind other parts.

  • Stop-start or not

Cars with stop-start use a heavier-duty starter, built for far more starts.

  • The real cause

Sometimes it is the wiring or the solenoid rather than the motor, so we test before we replace.

  • A clear quote first

You get the price for your car before we start, with no hidden fees.

How it works

  1. Tell us what it does

The make and model, where it is parked, and the noise it makes, or doesn’t.

  2. Test first

Battery, starter and wiring tested, so you only pay for what fixes it.

  3. Replaced where it is parked

On your driveway, at work or at the roadside.

  4. Started, then pay

We check it starts every time before you pay.

Starter motor questions

All questions

How much does a typical repair cost?

Without the overheads of a fixed garage, our labour rates are usually lower than main dealers and many local workshops. Prices depend on the job, the make and the parts needed, but you always get a clear quote before any work starts, and servicing is fixed-price. There are no hidden call-out fees within our normal area, and we will tell you if a repair would not be worth it compared with what the car is worth.

Is it the starter motor or the battery?

Dim or flickering dashboard lights, slow cranking or rapid clicking usually point to the battery. Bright dashboard lights with a single loud click, or nothing at all, point more towards the starter motor or its wiring. Only a proper test tells you for certain, which is why we test both before recommending anything.

Can a starter motor be replaced on the driveway?

On most cars, yes. It is a common job at home, at work or at the roadside. Some starters are tucked away behind other parts and take longer to reach, and that is reflected in the quote you get before we start.
