Engine management light on?
Here’s what it means, when it’s safe to keep driving, and how we find the fault wherever your car is parked.

The engine management light, the amber engine-shaped symbol on your dashboard, comes on when the engine’s computer logs a fault. It might be something minor, like a sensor, or the first sign of something that will get expensive if it is ignored.
We read the fault codes with dealer-level diagnostics wherever your car is parked, check the live data to confirm what they mean, and explain it in plain English before any work starts.
Steady or flashing?
A steady light
- The car has logged a fault
- If it drives normally, you can usually carry on gently
- Book a check soon, before a small fault becomes a big one
A flashing light
- Usually a serious misfire
- Driving on can damage the catalytic converter
- Stop somewhere safe and call us on 07989 747065
Common causes
The light covers hundreds of possible faults. These are some of the most common:
- Faulty sensors
- Misfires from coils or spark plugs
- DPF problems
- EGR valve faults
- Glow plug faults on diesels
- Exhaust and emissions faults
- A loose fuel cap on some petrol cars
- Wiring and connector faults
Why a code reader isn’t the whole answer
A cheap code reader tells you which system has logged a fault, not which part has failed, and swapping parts until the light goes out gets expensive fast. We read the codes, check the live data and, where it helps, road test the car, so we fix what is actually wrong. Then we clear the code and retest.
MOT due?
Since May 2018 an engine management light that stays on is an automatic MOT fail. Get it sorted first with our pre-MOT checks.
Engine light questions
All questionsMy engine warning light is on. Can I keep driving?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually carry on gently and book a check soon. If it is flashing, or the car has lost power, is overheating or is making a new noise, stop somewhere safe and call us, because driving on can turn a small repair into a big one.
Can you just clear the engine light?
Clearing the fault code switches the light off, but if the fault is still there the light comes back, sometimes after the problem has got worse. We find and fix the cause first, then clear the code and retest the system.
Will my car fail its MOT with the engine light on?
Yes. Since May 2018 an engine management light that stays on is a major defect in the MOT, so the car will fail. Get it looked at before the test.
