Car in limp mode?
Limp mode protects the engine or gearbox by cutting the power. We find out what triggered it and fix the cause, wherever the car is parked.
Limp mode, or limp home mode, is a safety feature. When the engine or gearbox computer sees a fault that could cause damage, it cuts the power, holds the revs down and sometimes locks the gearbox in one gear, so you can get home without making things worse.
It usually comes with the engine management light or a gearbox warning. Our dealer-level diagnostics read what triggered it, and we fix the cause on your driveway or at work wherever we can.
Signs you’re in limp mode
- A sudden loss of power
- The revs won’t rise much
- Stuck in one gear
- The turbo isn’t boosting
- An engine or gearbox warning light
- Cruise control or stop-start stops working
What puts a car into limp mode
Almost anything the engine computer thinks could do damage. The most common causes:
- DPF problems
- EGR valve faults
- Boost leaks and split turbo hoses
- Faulty sensors
- Misfires
- Wiring and connector faults
- Gearbox faults or low fluid
- Low battery voltage
Why it goes away when you restart
Switching the engine off and on again often brings the power back, because the car checks the fault again. It hasn’t fixed anything, though. The fault is still logged, and the car will drop back into limp mode until the cause is put right.
We read the codes, look at the live data, such as boost pressure and sensor readings, and road test the car where it helps, so we fix what is actually wrong rather than clearing the light and hoping.
Driving in limp mode
Keep it gentle and short. With the power cut you can’t accelerate or keep up with fast traffic, so avoid motorways and busy dual carriageways and head home or somewhere safe. Then call us on 07989 747065.
Limp mode questions
All questionsMy engine warning light is on. Can I keep driving?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually carry on gently and book a check soon. If it is flashing, or the car has lost power, is overheating or is making a new noise, stop somewhere safe and call us, because driving on can turn a small repair into a big one.
Can I drive in limp mode?
Only gently, and only as far as home or somewhere safe. Limp mode cuts the power, so the car cannot accelerate or keep up with fast traffic, which makes motorways and busy roads risky. Get it checked before you use the car normally again.
Why does limp mode go away when I restart the car?
Restarting makes the car check the fault again, so the power often comes back for a while. The fault is still logged, though, and the car will drop back into limp mode until the cause is fixed.
