EGR valve problems and replacement
Lumpy idle, flat spots, black smoke or limp mode? We test the EGR valve and the sensors around it, and fix what is actually wrong, at your home or work.

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve feeds a little exhaust gas back into the engine to cut emissions. Over time it clogs with carbon, sticks open or shut, or its motor or position sensor fails.
Diesels suffer most, especially cars that do lots of short journeys, but many petrol engines have one too. We read the EGR data with dealer-level Autel and Snap-On diagnostics, test the valve, and fix or replace it on your driveway or at work.
Signs of an EGR valve problem
- Engine management light
- Rough or lumpy idle
- Flat spots or hesitation
- Loss of power or limp mode
- Black smoke
- Stalling
- Worse fuel economy
Why EGR valves fail
Short journeys
The engine rarely gets hot enough for long enough to keep the valve clean.
Carbon build-up
Soot and oil vapour bake onto the valve until it sticks.
Electrical faults
The valve’s motor or its position sensor can fail on their own.
Wear
Like any moving part, the valve and its seals wear with age and mileage.
Repair or replace?
A valve that is clogged but otherwise healthy can sometimes be cleaned and refitted. If it is worn, or the motor or position sensor has failed, it needs replacing, and on some cars the new valve then has to be set up with diagnostic equipment. We test it first and tell you which you need, with a clear quote, before any work starts.
DPF light on too?
A sticking EGR valve adds soot to the exhaust, which can block the diesel particulate filter. If your DPF light is on as well, read about DPF problems.
EGR valve questions
All questionsHow much does a typical repair cost?
Without the overheads of a fixed garage, our labour rates are usually lower than main dealers and many local workshops. Prices depend on the job, the make and the parts needed, but you always get a clear quote before any work starts, and servicing is fixed-price. There are no hidden call-out fees within our normal area, and we will tell you if a repair would not be worth it compared with what the car is worth.
Can I drive with a faulty EGR valve?
Usually for a short while, but get it looked at soon. A valve stuck open or shut makes the engine run poorly, can put it into limp mode and, on a diesel, adds soot that can block the DPF, which is a much bigger bill.
Can the EGR valve just be blanked off?
No. Removing or blanking off emissions equipment on a road car is against the law and can fail the MOT. The fix is to repair or replace the valve, so the engine runs the way the manufacturer designed it.
