Car won’t start?
Tell us what it does when you turn the key or press start. We come to you, find the cause and, most of the time, get you going on the spot.

A car that won’t start is nearly always down to one of three things: the battery, the starter motor, or the engine not getting the fuel or spark it needs. What it does when you try to start it is the best clue.
We come to you at home, at work or at the roadside, usually within the hour, find the cause with dealer-level diagnostics and, most of the time, fix it there and then.
What is your car doing?
Nothing at all
- No sound, and the dashboard is dark or dim
- Usually a flat battery or a bad connection at the terminals
- See car battery replacement
Clicking, but it won’t turn over
- Rapid clicking usually means a weak battery
- One loud click with bright dash lights points to the starter motor
- See starter motor replacement
It turns over but won’t fire
- A fuel supply fault, or a failed sensor such as the crankshaft sensor
- Glow plug faults on some diesels in cold weather
- An immobiliser that does not recognise the key
It starts, then cuts out
- Often a fuel pressure, sensor or immobiliser fault
- The engine computer usually logs what it saw
- See mobile diagnostics

Worth trying before you call
A few quick checks sort out more non-starts than you would think:
Try the spare key
A flat battery in the key fob can stop some cars recognising the key.
Free the steering lock
If the key won’t turn, move the steering wheel gently while you turn it.
Check the gear lever
Automatics start in Park, sometimes Neutral. Many manuals need the clutch pressed right down.
Don’t keep cranking
Short tries with a pause between. Cranking for ages flattens the battery and can overheat the starter.

Fixed, or a plan B
Most non-starts are fixed on the spot. If not, recovery wherever you choose, or the repair at home the next day.
Non-start questions
All questionsIs it the starter motor or the battery?
Dim or flickering dashboard lights, slow cranking or rapid clicking usually point to the battery. Bright dashboard lights with a single loud click, or nothing at all, point more towards the starter motor or its wiring. Only a proper test tells you for certain, which is why we test both before recommending anything.
Why won’t my car start on cold mornings?
Cold weather slows down the chemistry inside the battery, so it gives less power just when the engine, with thicker oil, needs more to turn over. A battery that is already weak often gives up on the first cold morning, which is why it pays to get it tested in the autumn.
Can you fix it where it is parked?
Most of the time, yes. Batteries, starter motors and minor fuel faults are usually put right on the spot, at home, at work or at the roadside. If it cannot be fixed there, we can arrange recovery to wherever you choose, or come back and do the repair at your home the next day.
